let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...

I live in Alabama. I can probably count on two hands the number of times it has snowed and stuck in my lifetime. Every time this happens, the city shuts down. There is not a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk left in grocery stores, and people are urged to stay off the roads. Now that we have Facebook, Twitter, and other mass forms of communication, it's much easier for friends and family who don't live in the South to let us know how ridiculous it is that we act this way when snow is even predicted to fall.
That being said, I like it when it snows in Alabama. Since we don't get it very often, it's something special...not expected. Waiting on it to come, I feel like a kid waiting for Santa. When I wake up, the first thing I do is look outside to see if it came...usually to be disappointed. But, occasionally, the ground is covered in a white blanket of fresh snow!
Last week, we got real snow! The weathermen had been talking about it for a week. Everyone was waiting to see if it would really happen. I woke up, ran to the window, and there, on the ground was...nothing...yet. By about 10:00 that morning, if you strained your eyes, you could see tiny snowflakes falling. But every time I looked out the front window at work, the flakes got bigger and bigger. Finally, we opened the back door so we could see it better and it was actually sticking to the ground!
Cue panic! Now everyone worried about getting home. Since it doesn't snow very often, our city doesn't have the equipment necessary to drive on snowy roads. So that meant short work day! I got to watch the end of the snowfall bundled up on my couch!
And finally, my favorite thing about snow in Alabama is that generally, it sticks around for a few hours and it's gone! It never gets dirty or ugly. It falls...it's pretty...we play in it...it melts. Business as usual the next day.
